Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to New York prosecutors. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday after being spotted at a McDonald’s. He was later arraigned on the charges.
former FBI special agent Maureen O’Connell speculated on Mangione’s mindset. She suggested that his academic achievements — graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and being valedictorian of his elite high school — may have fostered a sense of intellectual superiority.
“I think he feels he’s smarter than everybody else,” O’Connell said. “He’s probably always been told he’s smarter than everyone else, and someone convinced him of that.” She added that while Mangione appeared to meticulously plan the crime, he seemed unprepared for its aftermath.
NYC Mayor Praises Pennsylvania Officer for Arrest
New York City Mayor Eric Adams personally thanked Altoona police officer Tyler Frye for arresting Mangione. In a phone call shared on X (formerly Twitter), Adams commended Frye’s “heads-up policing” and expressed gratitude for the collaboration between local and state authorities and the NYPD.
“We’re very appreciative of the partnership... Together, we brought him into custody and took a dangerous individual off our streets,” Adams said.
Frye, a six-month rookie on the force, said the recognition was unexpected but rewarding. “It was a great experience for me, and I’m more than happy to take someone like that off the street,” he said.
